In partnership with FCA, RACOBAO has since 2014 engaged in promoting quality education in Primary schools. This engagement started when FCA introduced Teachers Without borders Finland (TWB) to RACOBAO to partner on a 1-year pilot project targeting 10 schools in Lyantonde district. The pilot resulted into a 3-year project aimed at increased use of inclusive, protective, and child centered methodologies in schools leading to reduced drop out and increased retention and better learning outcomes.
Currently, RACOBAO has expanded the program to include education in emergencies in Mubende and Kamwenge Districts and aims at improving the learning outcomes of children through strengthening the literacy and numeracy levels of pupils in the focus primary schools. The project makes use of UNICEF’s 4 pillar approach; teacher competence, pupil involvement, management responsiveness, and parental/ guardian support.
RACOBAO promotes a whole-school approach to make schools safer and more learner-centered by strengthening governing bodies, school management Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and School Management Committees (SMCs) to both effectively participate in school and pupil learning activities and to monitor the delivery of education services.
In addition, the project supports the involvement of communities to appreciate their roles in upholding children’s rights and minimizing violence against children, as well as enhancing positive and supportive school environment by forming Community Mobilisation Committees (CMCs) to every targeted school to voluntarily undertake monitoring, report against vices, such as teenage pregnancies, corporal punishments, school drop outs and school-based SRGBV referral systems within all targeted schools.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, RACOBAO came to the support of the District Education Office’s efforts to prevent learners from contracting the virus. RACOBAO promoted hand washing among learners and their teachers by distributing and setting up hand washing facilities in 20 targeted schools as well as distributing hand sanitizer liquid and guns.
