STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY RESPONSE AGAINST HIV& AIDS IN RAKAI DISTRICT (funded by The Civil Society Fund (CSF).

RACOBAO is implementing a three year project which has strengthened community response against HIV in Rakai district. The project addresses socio cultural, behavioral, as well as structural drivers of HIV infection. In this regard therefore RACOBAO promotes the combination prevention strategy which has led to increased adoption of safer sexual behaviors/ practices and reduced risky behavior among the targeted population of Lwamaggwa, Dwaniro, Kacheera and Kagamaba sub-counties in Rakai district. The MARPs and communities around are empowered to reduce the prevalence and incidence of HIV/AIDS. RACOBAO is partnering with sub partners including Salama Shield Foundation, RANASO and Edward Iga Foundation to conduct behavioral change communication to prevent HIV sexual transmission; promote condom distribution; sensitize, mobilize and refer communities for safe medical male circumcision; prevent and treat sexually transmitted diseases; sensitize and mobilize communities for HIV counseling and testing; mitigate stigma and discrimination; and also care treatment and support. Advocacy and networking are an integral part of the project. Because of the good collaboration with the District Health Officer’s office, Religious and cultural leaders, People Living with HIV groups, and the Civil Society Organizations in Rakai district, referrals for services such as Safe Medical Circumcision, HIV Counseling and Testing, and treatment of STIs and care, support and treatment have been strengthened.
